OUR CURRICULUM

1: FUNDAMENTAL, FOUNDATIONAL & OLYMPIC LIFTS

Coaches explore simple to complex movement patterns establishing a strong understanding for the principles underpinning progression and regression

2: PERIODIZATION, PROGRAMMING & EXERCISE SELECTION

Coaches evaluate periodization, programming and exercise selection in the context of various sports, codes and competition calendars. The curriculum draws on online content to discuss the similarities and disparities in the methods used to enhance human performance

3: PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS AND KPIS

Coaches get hands on in a session that asks them to decide what really matters when identifying key performance indicators for a sport. Coaches gain operational experience with a variety of technologies including but not limited to: contact mats, force plates, laser timing systems and DEXA body composition scanning

4: DATA MANAGEMENT AND VISUALIZATION

Coaches learn and employ contemporary methods in data collection, visualization and dissemination. Exposure to Excel, Google Data Studio, PowerBI and R gives coaches a broad introduction to the variety of options that can aid in making sense of the numbers

5: METHODS IN VELOCITY-BASED TRAINING

Using methods from data management and visualization, coaches become intimately familiar with load-velocity profiling and the assumptions inherent to velocity-based training. Development in this area allows coaches to apply concepts of periodization, programming and exercise selection with greater precision

6: REHABBING THE ACL-INJURED ATHLETE

Rehabbing the ACL-injured athlete is an unfortunate reality met by most every practitioner. Coaches develop a deeper understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of rehabbing season-ending injuries giving thought to the physical, mental and social elements leading to a successful return to competition

7: WEB-BASED RESUME DEVELOPMENT

After critiquing and reformatting current PDF resumes, coaches look to take their portfolios online making use of LinkedIn, Adobe Spark and other web-site builders, allowing their job application material to stand out

8: INTERVIEW PREP

Coaches are interviewed by Marquette’s Sports Performance staff in order to prepare the developing professional for their first job opportunity. Interviews are recorded, critiqued and shared with fellow intern coaches to learn from each other

9: ANNUAL PLAN PRESENTATION

After 14-16 weeks in development, the semester culminates in coaches delivering their second professional presentation. Performance staff, students and alumni are invited to attend in person or via live-stream as coaches defend their physical preparation program for a sport assigned to them in week one
