OUR CURRICULUM

1: INTERNSHIP ORIENTATION AND PHILOSOPHY

The first week of our curriculum focuses on acclimating our Intern Coaches to our training environment, department and individual coaching philosophies, and expectations for the upcoming semester. More specifically, this week focuses on team assignments, setup and breakdown expectations, and an overview of the curriculum to follow.

2: OLYMPIC LIFTING

Intern Coaches are educated early in the week about the fundamentals of Olympic Lifting, and the debate of whether to use them or not. This is followed by a practical session on the floor with all staff included.

3: STRENGTH MOVEMENTS

Main movements including but not limited to the squat, bench, and deadlift will be covered in depth so that Intern Coaches are proficient in coaching the movements on the floor with efficiency. This topic also covers the creation of a movement hierarchy, and the modifications and lateralizations used for injured athletes.

4: ASSESSMENTS (STABILITY AND MOBILITY)

Intern Coaches will learn about the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and any other assessments we use at LMU for our student athletes. This topic will also cover the joint-by-joint approach, and the differences between stability and mobility.

5: INTRO TO EXCEL

Intern Coaches will be taught the basics of excel including program template design, testing recording, and pivot charts, among others.

6: PROGRAM DESIGN

All Full-Time Coaches assist in educating our Intern Coaches on their individual training philosophies and the systems they have learned through their development. This includes reviewing the tier system, undulating training, block periodization, and concurrent training, among others. The creation of an annual plan, needs analysis, and 3-week microcycle is included within this topic.

7: PLYOMETRICS AND POWER DEVELOPMENT

We educate our Intern Coaches on the utilization of plyometrics and power development within a training program and the proper progressions and regressions. Foot contacts, post-activation potentiation (PAP), velocity-based training (VBT), and contrast training are some of the subjects covered.

8: SPEED AND AGILITY

Intern coaches are taken through practical sessions focused on acceleration, max velocity, change of direction, and agility. We focus on the different methods that can develop these qualities with the resources and time we have at our disposal.

9: ENERGY SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

We educate our Intern Coaches on the science behind all energy systems used in sport, how we can test our student athletes to identify deficiencies, and prescriptions used to enhance these systems. We also touch on GPS data collection, and how this guides our energy system development programming to prepare our student athletes for the most demanding passages of play within their respective sport.
