OUR CURRICULUM

 

1: COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT

Conducting yourself professionally, communicating with support staff and sport coaches, and building a professional network to further progress your development in the performance industry.

Assignment: Networking assignment in which you will call three coaches in the performance industry to help you get a better understanding of what it’s like to have a career in different sectors of the industry.

2: NEEDS ANALYSIS

Understanding how to determine the sport demands, performing a biomechanical analysis, researching common injuries, and analyzing energy systems to construct a blueprint necessary to design macrocycles for athletes.

Assignment: Review our departmental needs analysis assessments and create a needs analysis for a sport of your choosing.

3: EVALUATION AND TESTING

Learn how to conduct reliable and valid testing to give athletes and coaches feedback on their short and long term progress.

Assignment: Review our departmental testing protocols for each Olympic Sport at University of Memphis and create testing protocols for a sport of your choosing.

 

4: PERIODIZATION AND PROGRAMMING

Learn how to organize your programming in a systematic and progressive way while building templates that you can utilize with athletes.

Assignment: Review our department annual periodization model for each Olympic Sport at University of Memphis and create a template for a sport of your choosing.

5: ENERGY SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

Learn and understand energy system development for athletes to guide proper progression and development throughout an athlete’s career.

Assignment: Incorporate conditioning into a systematic training program for a sport of your choosing.

6: SPEED AND AGILITY DEVELOPMENT

Breaking down the proper form, coaching cues, and implementation for acceleration, maximum velocity, deceleration, change of direction, and agility progressions of training.

Assignment: Incorporate speed and agility into a systematic training program for a sport of your choosing.

 

7: PLYOMETRICS

Understand how the stretch shortening cycle can be trained and how plyometrics can be implemented to increase coordination and rate of force production.

Assignment: Incorporate plyometrics into a systematic training program for a sport of your choosing.

8: STRENGTH AND POWER CONCEPTS AND METHODS

Learn different movement patterns, progressions, concepts, and methodologies that can be used to guide strength and power development.

Assignment: Evaluations and hands on experience coaching exercise technique to athletes of various experience levels.

9: RETURN TO PLAY

Learn how you can collaborate with sports medicine to return an athlete safely back to sport following an injury.
