OUR CURRICULUM
1: MENTAL HEALTH & FIRST AID
At the University of Utah, our number 1 priority is the health and wellbeing of our student athletes. For this reason, our first lesson will be led by our Sports Psychology and Athletic Training departments to ensure that all of our interns are equipped to respond to issues of athlete health and wellbeing.
2: CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Within this session we will cover the entire process of getting a job including: networking, application, and interview. This will also kick off our semester long project of building a coaching portfolio.
3: PROGRAMMING & PLANNING
Interns will learn how to create annual plans that account for all the potential scheduling conflicts including: academics, holidays, travel, etc. Next we will cover how to program for different goals within the structure of the annual plan.
4: ENERGY SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
We will cover the theory of energy systems and applications for training these systems. Our Sports Nutrition Department will assist with this lesson and address how nutritional choices can support different energy system demands.
5: FOUNDATIONAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS
Interns will learn how to coach and perform exercises from each of our foundational movement patterns. We will also cover progressions and regressions for each pattern along with common faults.
6: OLYMPIC LIFTING
Interns will be taught the clean, jerk, and snatch patterns. We will also cover progressions and regressions for each pattern along with common faults.
7: RETURN TO PLAY
This lesson will be taught collaboratively with the Athletic Training department as we highlight our return to play process. This lesson will cover screening, re-introduction to the weight room, and common mistakes made in return to play.
8: TESTING AND DATA MANAGEMENT
Interns will learn how to both select and conduct various athletic tests. We will also cover how to manage and display data collected from testing.
9: PROJECT PRESENTATIONS
Interns will utilize the skills acquired throughout the semester to create a coaching portfolio. These portfolios will be presented to the staff.
